This super creamy Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting is packed with peanut butter flavor and only uses 6 ingredients. It’s thick, fluffy, and perfect for piping onto your favorite desserts.

Peanut Butter Frosting with Cream Cheese
Unlike traditional cream cheese frosting, this recipe uses sour cream for an extra creamy result. It doesn’t overwhelm the flavor of the frosting but makes it smoother and works with the cream cheese and peanut butter to balance out the sweetness.
In about 5 minutes, you’ve got the perfect frosting for anything you like, especially chocolate desserts! Use it on cakes, cupcakes, cookies, quick bread recipes, and even brownies!
Like with Reese’s cups, it’s hard to beat peanut butter and chocolate, so I wanted to create a frosting that woudl be great on chocolate desserts that was also rich and creamy like peanut butter pie. This cream cheese peanut butter frosting has the perfect mix of creaminess, richness and sweetness.
Make Sure You Do These Things
- If you want to pipe the frosting onto desserts, make sure to chill it in the fridge so it will hold up well.
- Don’t use a Natural peanut butter, my favorite is Jiff creamy.
- Let the cream cheese come to room temperature before mixing for a smooth consistency.
To make this recipe, you’ll start by beating the cream cheese and butter until it’s fluffy. Then, you’ll add the rest of the ingredients. You can use either an electric mixer or a hand mixer to make this recipe. Just make sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl so everything is incorporated.
This thick and creamy frosting is made with basic pantry staples like peanut butter, softened butter and cream cheese, powdered sugar, sour cream, and vanilla extract.

This Will Become Your Favorite Frosting Because…
- Packed with peanut butter flavor: This is a fantastic frosting that tastes like a peanut butter pie. It’s smooth and creamy and not too sweet.
- Quick: It only takes 5 minutes to make, which is quicker than making a trip to the store to buy frosting.
- Simple: You probably have all the ingredients you need to make this recipe in your kitchen right now.
You’ll Need These Basic Pantry Staples
Here’s a brief overview of what you need to make this frosting. The full list of recipe ingredients is in the recipe card below.

- Peanut butter: Use a smooth, creamy peanut butter, not a natural peanut butter where the oils may separate. Don’t use crunchy peanut butter either, as it might not pipe as well.
- Cream cheese: Use full-fat, block-style cream cheese for this recipe. Make sure it’s at room temperature so it blends easily. If you forget to let your cream cheese sit out, check out how to soften cream cheese quickly.
- Sour cream: This makes the frosting super creamy and gives it a slightly tangy flavor, but it’s not overwhelming. You can still get a fabulous frosting without the sour cream, but I love how it gives it a little boost.

Pop the frosting into the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to one week or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Make sure to let it thaw in the fridge overnight before whipping it up again to make it fluffy.

Ingredients
- 8 ounces cream cheese room temp
- ½ cup butter room temp
- 1 cup smooth peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon sour cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 3 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Add the cream cheese and butter to a stand mixer and beat until smooth. Add peanut butter, sour cream and vanilla and beat until smooth.
- Gradually add powdered sugar with the mixer on low. Once it is incorporated, turn to medium-high and beat for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy. If it is too thin, add up to a cup of additional powdered sugar. If piping, refrigerate for 15-30 minutes to make it easier to pipe.
Notes
- Will generously frost 18 cupcakes or spread onto 24 cupcakes
- There is enough frosting to frost a 3 layer cake.
- Make sure you don’t use an all natural peanut butter.
- You can make this sweeter by adding more powdered sugar. If it gets too thick, add a little milk or cream.
