Everything You Need Is Already in Your Pantry

Slow cooker chocolate cake feels a little bit like cheating. You stir everything together in one bowl, pour it into the slow cooker, sprinkle a quick sugar and cocoa layer, and pour hot water on top.

That hot water you pour over at the end sinks down, turns into a glossy sauce. This leaves the top set just enough to spoon out in big, warm scoops, like a self-saucing pudding or lava cake.

This crock pot chocolate lava cake has the same comforting appeal as an old fashioned chocolate cobbler and warm chocolate bread pudding, simple ingredients, minimal effort, and a warm, fudgy payoff that’s meant to be served by the scoop.

Plan to serve this right when it’s done. The cake keeps cooking from the residual heat, so the longer it sits, the thicker and more set that gooey layer becomes. It’s still good later, but for a true molten center, timing matters.

  • Cocoa Powder: Unsweetened cocoa is what you need. You can use regular or a darker cocoa if you want a more intense flavor.
  • Chocolate Chips: Semi-sweet chips keep things balanced. Use dark chocolate chips if you want a stronger chocolate flavor.

This recipe works best in a 5–6 quart slow cooker for the right cake-to-sauce ratio.
